How to Prevent Cancer
In Japan, the death rate by cancer has been increasing recently according to the data of National Cancer Center. Cancer has been the most common cause of death since 1981. The death from cancer is over thirty percent of all deaths and over three hundred thousand people died from it in 2002. Among all deaths from cancer, stomach cancer was number one, but recently that tends to decrease. In the book of “yokuwakaru kokoro to kaerada”, it is written that it effects on this decrease that people can find cancer and cure them early by medical examination. On the other hand, lung cancer is the most common now. It is said because of smoking, air pollution and aging society, in addition, because it is difficult to find lung cancer early in the same book. As for females, breast cancer’s increase is remarkable. The same book says again that the one of reasons is that women can be given feminine hormone longer than before by decline of the rate of having babies. In order to prevent these cancers, we should care about our life style. National Cancer Center suggests twelve articles for preventing it.
First, we should have balanced diets. Second, we should change food menu every day. Third, we should not eat too much and keep off fat. Forth, we should not drink too much. Fifth, we should not smoke. Sixth, we should get proper vitamins and a lot of dietary fiber from food. Seventh, we should not have too much salty food and eat food after cooling it. Eighth, we should not eat burned parts of food. Ninth, we should pay attention to mold. Tenth, we should not be saturated with sun. Eleventh, we should exercise properly. Twelfth, we should keep our body clean. National Cancer Center says that if we obey these articles, we can reduce cancer by about 60 percent. Then, how are these articles related to preventing cancer? I pick up three articles and explain how they are related to cancer.
To begin with, I pick up the first article; we should have balanced diets. Food is the most basic thing of life and unbalanced diet is related to getting cancer. In other words, foods which we eat every day have both substances that make cancer and that stop making cancer. Therefore, if we destroy balanced diet, it is easy to get sick. For example, having too much fat is likely to cause breast cancer, large intestine cancer and uterus cancer. In contrast, vitamin A, C, E, and dietary fiber help reduce carcinogenicity. In conclusion, when we have good diets, it is important to have as many kinds of food as possible to suppress carcinogen.
Next, I pick up the forth article; we should not drink too much. Most of people think that too much drinking causes bad effect to the liver. However, it also affects other body parts; the oral cavity, the larynx, and the esophagus. WHO reported that too much drinking is related to oral cancer, larynx cancer and esophagus cancer. According to the book, people in Normandy in France make it a practice to take brandy which is high alcohol, so esophagus cancer is the most common there. This is a good example to explain that high alcohol injures cells of mucous membranes in oral cavity, larynx and esophagus. Also, people who like alcohol are apt to drink without eating, that is, they have unbalanced diets, so it is easier for them to get cancer. When we drink, we should care about drinking moderately and weaken alcohol with water.
Finally, I pick up fifth article; we should not smoke. In the article “Smoking Cancer” of Newsweek (I do not know when it was published),? “’people have a general sense that tobacco is harmful,’ says Dr. Michele Bloch of the U. S. National Cancer Institute, ‘but they do not appreciate the magnitude of the risk.’” The survey of one hundred twenty thousand men over forty age by the Japanese National Cancer Center shows that the number of men who smoke over twenty five cigarettes a day dying from larynx cancer is ninety times as many as that of men who do not smoke, and that of the former men dying from lung cancer is seven times as many as that of the latter men. However, if smokers stop smoking for five years, they can get the same condition as men who do not smoke. In addition, smokers cause bad effect not only to themselves but also to people surrounding them. A survey shows that the number of wives who do not smoke but have husbands who are heavy smokers dying from lung cancer is about twice as many as that of wives who have husbands who do not smoke. It is because smoke from a burned part of cigarette has more carcinogen than that from a part of mouth’s fitting. Also, the risks of dying from lung cancer are especially high for women. According to the article, “new studies suggest that woman develop lung cancer at young age than men, and after fewer years of smoking….they may metabolize the carcinogens in tobacco differently, says University of Wisconsin oncologist Joan Schiller. Or their bodies may have more trouble repairing DNA damaged by the carcinogens in tobacco smoke. And estrogen may speed the growth of cancerous lung cells.” Thus, in order to prevent cancer, not smoking is necessary.
These articles are not difficult to obey, so we ought to be careful about them to prevent cancer. The reason why cancer break out is not clear enough. However, if we have balanced diet, care about drinking and smoking, and lead a life without too much stress, it is more difficult to get cancer.

Ramen and Japan

There are many food cultures in the world. The typical Japanese food culture is Japanese food include miso soup, sushi, and gyudon. However, “there is one hidden Japanese food culture only noticed a little. It is raumen which is noodle soup,” said Hiroshi Iwasaki who is the curator of Raumen Museum. According to the pamphlet of Raumen Museum, the history of raumen is a little more than 100 years. It first appeared in 1900. Chinese cooks who lived in the bay towns of Nagasaki, Kobe, and Hakodate opened on the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate and started to make Chinese noodle all over Japan and Japanese remade those noodle for Japanese climate and favorite taste. All Japanese have eaten raumen in their life and it is loved by all Japanese. Now, in Japan, there are over 200 thousands reumen restaurants from the special restaurants to the restaurants in the parking area of high ways. Raumen is Japanese national food. Why is raumen so popular in Japan?
The most important reason is that the first instant raumen was sold in 1958. It spread the existence of raumen. The inventor of instant raumen is Momofuku Ando who is the establisher of Nissin Foods. On the Nissin Foods homepage,(http://www.nissinfoods.co.jp/), this is the story of cup raumen; ‘Momofuku Ando failed in his business and decided to start over again. He though food is the origin of everything. He always remembered that people made a long line to wait for eating cheap and tasty raumen at the stand in the ruins of a war and decided to make raumen which could have eaten with little troubles. It took three years to investigate and invent instant raumen. Finally, on August 25th in 1958, he invented “Chicken Raumen” which is the first instant raumen and a very big invention.’ It was a big seller and called magic raumen. Even though it is impossible for the powder soup of instant raumen to reproduce the thick taste of carefully cooked broth and it is difficult to boil enough water in which noodles can be stirred around properly with home cooking pot, instant raumen still enjoys enormous popularity in Japan. Seeing the above fact, instant raumen has been the exact major contributor to the popularity of the raumen.
Another reason is that many kinds of raumen taste fascinate people. There are typical four kinds: soy sause, soybean paste (miso), salt, and tonkotsu which is stock form bone of the pork. Not only the kind of soup, but also the kinds of noodle and topping attract people. From these basics, local tastes and identities appeared. According to the homepage of lovers of raumen, it is said that there are about 20 kinds of local raumen in Japan. Kyushu raumen, for example, its soup is strong tonkotu and noodle is a thin one which only slightly catches the soup broth. On the other hand, Tokyo raumen, its soup which is plain soy sauce and the noodle is thick and kinky one to catch much soup. The roast pork which is one of the major topping is devised by each restaurants. Some people go to raumen shops to eat roast pork. The boiled egg is also a popular topping. Each raumen restaurant considers the balance of soup, noodle, and topping. These many ideas captivate people. Now, to attract more customers and give more delicious raumen, raumen shops are in the competition and new kinds of taste have been invented.
Finally, the reason why raumen is so popular in Japan is that Japanese are easily affected by trends. It is the fact that is needless to say of Japanese. In recent years, raumen has been headlined by media. Once a famous raumen restaurant is reported on TV, the next day, there are long waiting lines to eat raumen at that restaurants. Many magazines also feature delicious and famous raumen restaurants. Some magazines feature only raumen shops. Some people who buy those magazines go around to each restaurant and note and comment about the taste and the atmosphere of the shop. In addition, the opening of a raumen museum in Yokohama was a very fresh idea and affected people all over in Japan. Going there, a raumen museum consists of eight raumen restaurants and shops are replaced regularly. The owner Hiroshi Iwasaki says that he goes around to the famous and delicious restaurants in Japan and asks to have their shop in the museum. It may be good and easy idea to go to raumen museum to eat trend raumen. There will be popularity of raumen forever as long as it is noticed by media and Japanese are easily effected by it.
There may be other reasons why raumen is so popular in Japan, but these reasons above are the main ones. It is very great that raumen because the national food even though its history is just over 100 years in Japan. This fact suggests how Japanese love raumen. Raumen’s popularity is still growing and the newest ideas appear every day. Even though raumen is very popular and it can be said that it is national food in Japan, few Japanese know that they made today’s raumen history. This is very sad things, so people knowing this fact should spread this to many people in Japan. Then, raumen’s history will be written in interesting way.
